THE RISE OF INSECT PROTEIN IN PET FOOD

The use of insect protein ingredients in the global pet food industry is steadily growing with consumers gaining interest and confidence in this novel protein source. Brands like Tomojo are focusing on replacing animal proteins in kibbles for consumers to reduce the environmental impact of their pets. Our own brand, ONE (with everything!), has gained attention in the media for its high-quality nutrition and taste appeal with dogs.

Internationally, brands are having commercial success using insect proteins with brands like Yora focusing on developing highly innovative products for their UK customers. Others such as Eat Small in Germany are taking this a step further with canned meatball products made from insect protein and others in the Netherlands are already gearing up for private label opportunity

We are seeing the Australian industry continuing to develop with more brands including insect protein ingredients in their formulations over the next 12 months. Insect protein will shift from being a hero ingredient to a preferred inclusion into blends of protein sources for treats, kibbles and wet foods as consumer acceptance and demand grows.

In the long term, insect protein may expand beyond the pet stratosphere to the human food sector with companies like Essento in Switzerland demonstrating the market potential of products for human consumption.
