Insect Frass for Increased Yield & Enhanced Flavour of your Produce

Insect Frass has healthy ratio of NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium), as well as the hero ingredient Chitin. Together, these ingredients supply plant-available nutrients to increase their biomass and nutrient content. Frass also increases the carbon content of soil, which improves overall soil and plant health, as well as making the plants more resistant to drought, flooding or salinity stressors. What does this mean in practice?

Insect Frass makes plants healthier and produce taste better.

Although, like with all good things, not all Frass is created equal.

A High Quality Frass:

  • Contains no contaminants

  • Has good particle size

  • Can be safely stored in bulk

First and foremost, Frass should comprise exactly that - without any contamination. When processing food by-products with Black Soldier Fly Larvae, it is not uncommon for indigestible materials to be present, such as packaging, egg shells, fruit and vegetable peels, bones, plastics and metals prior to Frass being processed. These materials should not be present in finished Frass. Similarly, Frass should not contain large quantities (>5%) of insect biomass which may significantly reduce the shelf-life of Frass.

Size matters when it comes to Frass. To get the most out of your microbially rich Frass, the smaller the particle size, the more readily it will fertilise the surrounding soil or blend with other products. A large particle size can be indicative of problems in the manufacturing process. This can mean that the Frass has not been treated completely and may result in less nutrients being delivered to plants.

Fresh Frass is a very biologically live or hot product. If it is not properly processed, it can heat up considerably due to the microbiological activity in the product, causing havoc when storing or transporting material. In small volumes this may not be an issue but, when transported in bulk, an untreated product may spoil and require costly disposal.

Viridian's Insect Frass is produced in line with the IPIFF EU Standards to create some of the highest quality Frass available in Australia. We understand our products well and use that knowledge to your advantage.
