The modern black soldier fly industry traces back to South African research, before scaling across Europe and North America. Australia followed, with the first operators emerging around 2013.
It has taken time to gain a foothold. But the need to process and end food waste by means other than landfill is now pressing enough that this organic, biological industry has not only taken root, it is expanding. Most operators remain at pilot to small-scale production; only a few have reached large scale. VRT, the industry leader, now operates at industrial scale.
